Invincible Season 2’s mid-season finale has unveiled the introduction of Mark Grayson’s younger brother, bringing a new dimension to the storyline. Please be cautious, as significant spoilers from Invincible Season 2, Episode 4, will be discussed.
In the initial season, Mark (played by Steven Yeun) is presented as the sole child of Nolan Grayson/Omni-Man (J.K. Simmons) and Debbie Grayson (Sandra Oh).
However, the dynamics of the Grayson family have undergone substantial changes since then, especially with the revelation that Nolan is, in fact, a villain. Despite these shifts, the overall count of family members has remained constant—until now. A surprising twist in Invincible Season 2, Episode 4, titled “It’s Been A While,” discloses that Mark has a sibling previously unknown to him.
Who is Mark’s Brother in Invincible Season 2?
Mark’s newfound sibling goes by the name Oliver, and he is technically Mark’s half-brother. Despite Omni-Man being Oliver’s father, Debbie is not his mother. Oliver is the result of Nolan’s relationship with his new wife, Andressa (portrayed by Rhea Seehorn), from the distant Thraxa.
The reason Mark was unaware of Oliver’s existence until the mid-season finale of Invincible Season 2 is that Oliver is a recently born baby from a faraway world. This also clarifies Oliver’s violet skin tone, as, similar to Mark, he is only part Viltrumite, with the remainder of his DNA originating from Thraxa through his mother.
Due to this unique lineage, Oliver appears slightly older than his actual age, as Thraxans age more rapidly than humans and Viltrumites. Simultaneously, he will age at a slower rate than an average Thraxan, thanks to his Viltrumite heritage.
While Oliver has inherited genetic advantages from Omni-Man, offering the promise of powers similar to his father and brother in the future, it comes with a caveat. These powers also make Oliver a target for the Viltrum Empire. As explained by Nolan in “It’s Been A While,” Viltrumites are prohibited from reproducing with non-similar species, including Thraxans. Offspring from such unions, such as Oliver, are marked for death, as evidenced when a trio of Viltrumites arrives later in the episode.
When Does Invincible Season 2, Part 2 Arrive?
Fortunately for Oliver, it appears that he manages to survive Season 2, Episode 4. In the final scene featuring him, Andressa is seen guiding Mark’s brother to safety within one of Thraxa’s underground caverns. Although Mark and Nolan are subsequently defeated, there is no indication that Oliver is discovered.
However, fans will need to exercise patience until the arrival of Invincible Season 2, Part 2 to conclusively determine Oliver’s fate. While the release date for these remaining four episodes remains uncertain, Prime Video has previously disclosed that they are scheduled to premiere sometime in early 2024.
