The Boy and the Heron Won the Weekend Domestic Box Office

The Boy and the Heron from Studio Ghibli has triumphed at the North American box office over the weekend, securing ticket sales of $12.8 million. Comscore reports that the film, once believed to be legendary director Hayao Miyazaki’s final project, also amassed an additional $2.4 million overseas, bringing its international total to $101.4 million. Globally, The Boy and the Heron has now exceeded $114.2 million.

Despite a previous retirement announcement, Miyazaki returned to create The Boy and the Heron. Studio Ghibli producer Toshio Suzuki revealed that Miyazaki is already immersed in his next project, expressing his acceptance and support for the director’s continuous dedication to his craft.

In its fourth week in theaters, Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes maintained a strong performance, securing second place at the box office with domestic ticket sales reaching $9.4 million. The prequel to The Hunger Games has garnered $135.6 million in North America and $278.9 million globally.

While awaiting its North American release on December 15, Wonka claimed the global box office throne with ticket sales amounting to $43.2 million. Godzilla Minus One took third place domestically with $8.3 million, followed by Trolls Band Together in fourth with $6.2 million, and Wish concluding the top five with $5.3 million.
