As the new year begins, the much-anticipated open-world Star Wars Outlaws game by Ubisoft now has a refined release timeframe.
Fans eagerly awaiting Star Wars Outlaws can now look forward to the game’s launch later this year. Initially revealed at Ubisoft’s 2023 Summer Game Fest, Star Wars Outlaws captured attention with an extensive gameplay trailer that provided a glimpse into the third-person shooter combat and introduced the main character, Kay Vess, and her companion Nix. The trailer displayed a “2024” release window, leaving fans curious about the exact launch date of this upcoming Star Wars adventure.
Set within the expansive Star Wars timeline, Outlaws is positioned between The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. The narrative will prominently feature infamous crime organizations within the Star Wars universe, including the notorious Jabba the Hutt. Despite unfolding during the original film trilogy, Star Wars Outlaws promises to offer fresh perspectives on worlds introduced in the sequel films, such as Cantonica from The Last Jedi and the icy Kijimi briefly visited in the opening scenes of 2019’s The Rise of Skywalker. A notable and ambitious feature showcased in Star Wars Outlaws is its seamless transition between planetary surfaces and space, eliminating the need for traditional loading screens.
Disney Backtracks on Star Wars Outlaws New Release Date
Just two days into the year 2024, the Disney Parks Blog inadvertently disclosed a more specific release timeframe for Star Wars Outlaws. In a blog post highlighting 24 upcoming attractions for Disney fans throughout the year, Disney made a reference to Ubisoft’s forthcoming Star Wars Outlaws, suggesting that it is slated for a release “late this year.” This choice of words implies a potential launch in the final four months of 2024, as the phrase “later this year” could still encompass spring or summer. Despite this, the wording has been reverted to simply “release in 2024.”
Even with the revision in the blog post, indications suggest that Disney and Ubisoft may still be internally considering a late 2024 release for Outlaws. With only two games securing firm release dates for the second half of the year, such as the ambitious Chinese Soulslike Black Myth: Wukong on August 20 and Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 on September 9, the fourth quarter of 2024 remains unclaimed. Star Wars, given its expansive universe, appears to be an ideal candidate for a fall or holiday release. Therefore, an October or November launch aligns well with the narrative journey of Kay Vess through the criminal underworld of Star Wars.
While Star Wars has already captivated a significant portion of the fandom, there is still much to be unveiled and discovered about the game before its official release. With the Summer Game Fest confirmed for 2024, it provides an optimal platform for Ubisoft to showcase more of its ambitious Star Wars title and potentially confirm an official release date.
