In a surprising turn of events towards the conclusion of The Game Awards, Square Enix delighted Final Fantasy 16 players by stealthily releasing the game’s initial paid DLC expansion.
At The Game Awards 2023, Square Enix caught Final Fantasy 16 enthusiasts off guard with the unannounced launch of the first installment of the two planned paid DLC expansions. Dubbed “Echoes of the Fallen,” this inaugural expansion for Final Fantasy 16 revolves around Clive and his companions unraveling a mystery tied to ancient technology and the enigmatic black crystals associated with it.
The revelation about the initial expansion for Final Fantasy 16 emerged as The Game Awards reached its conclusion. The game had garnered four nominations at the event, including Best Narrative, Best RPG, and Best Performance for Ben Starr’s portrayal of Clive Rosfield. Although it clinched only one award—Best Score and Music—Final Fantasy 16’s lead composer, Masayoshi Soken, expressed joy at the win. Fans took to social media to extend their congratulations to Soken and Creative Business Unit 3 for their outstanding contributions. The positive news for FF16 enthusiasts did not conclude there, adding to their excitement.
In a narrative preceding the climactic battle against the godlike entity Ultima in Final Fantasy 16, the recently released expansion, Echoes of the Fallen, unfolds. Clive receives a mysterious black crystal from Charon, who professes limited knowledge about it. As the story progresses, Clive and the party encounter black market traders, sparking an investigation into the Fallen ruins. This quest eventually leads Clive to a confrontation with the Omega Weapon, a recurring super boss in the Final Fantasy series. The nature of this new conflict with the Omega Weapon is yet to be compared to its past iterations. The expansion is priced at $9.99.

However, accessing Echoes of the Fallen requires a new Final Fantasy 16 patch. Combining the patch and the expansion necessitates an additional 18 GB of storage space, in addition to the existing 90 GB occupied by the game. Final Fantasy 16 has also confirmed the upcoming release of the second paid expansion, “The Rising Tide,” scheduled for Spring 2024. In this expansion, Clive and the party will journey to the recurring Final Fantasy series location, Mysidia, culminating in a confrontation with the aquatic Eikon known as Leviathan the Lost. The unfolding narrative of the Water Eikon is a long-standing mystery in Final Fantasy 16, and it remains to be seen how players will respond to these new stories.
Both Echoes of the Fallen and The Rising Tide can be obtained as part of an Expansion Pack priced at $24.99. Given the historical significance of the narratives involving The Fallen and the Eikon Leviathan in Final Fantasy 16, the player community’s reaction to these fresh tales is eagerly anticipated.
