EA has unveiled that their upcoming Iron Man game will be developed utilizing Epic Games’ Unreal Engine 5. This marks the third full-fledged game from EA Motive since its establishment in 2015. Initially, the studio collaborated with DICE and Criterion Games on Star Wars: Battlefront 2 before releasing its standalone title, Star Wars: Squadrons, in 2020. Most recently, Motive gained widespread acclaim for its Dead Space remake, released earlier this year, widely regarded as one of the standout games of 2023.
Unreal Engine 5 has become a go-to tool for numerous third-party, and even some first-party, development studios. Before its release, Epic Games partnered with the Gears of War studio, The Coalition, in cooperation with PlayStation and Xbox, to create remarkable tech demos, including The Coalition’s The Matrix Awakens, which launched in late 2021. This year has witnessed the release of some major titles developed using this engine. Games like Immortals of Aveum, Fort Solis, and the recently launched Soulslike title, Lords of the Fallen, are among the initial Unreal Engine 5 projects that have seen the light of day. Looking forward, there’s an array of high-profile Unreal Engine 5 titles in the pipeline, such as Black Myth: Wukong, Stalker 2, Ark 2, the Silent Hill 2 remake, and Xbox’s Senua’s Saga: Hellblade 2, among others.
The Iron Man game now adds to the growing list of Unreal Engine 5 projects in development. In an update blog post from EA Motive, General Manager Patrick Klaus confirmed that their forthcoming Iron Man game will indeed harness Unreal Engine 5. Notably, Motive’s Star Wars: Squadrons and Dead Space remakes were created using EA’s in-house Frostbite engine Iron Man game will be their maiden venture with external technology. Klaus also mentioned that the Iron Man game is still in the early stages of pre-production, which aligns with the fact that Dead Space was launched a mere nine months ago.
EA’s Frostbite engine has historically faced criticism for causing problems in various EA titles, including Mass Effect Andromeda and Anthem, and even contributed to the closure of Visceral Games in 2017. Although Motive has experienced success with Frostbite in their titles, moving to Unreal Engine 5 for Iron Man game appears to be a strategic decision. It will be intriguing to see if this shift suggests that EA might eventually transition away from Frostbite or relegate its use primarily to their annual EA Sports franchises. As Unreal Engine 5 stands as one of the most visually impressive game engines in the hands of developers, fans of Marvel’s tech genius, Iron Man, have reason to be thrilled about this transition. However, considering Iron Man game is still in early pre-production, it will be a few years before fans can expect to see more substantial developments.
