The emerging game studio, Lightspeed LA, has unveiled its inaugural major project, Last Sentinel, an open-world cyberpunk game set in a futuristic and dystopian Tokyo. The announcement was made through a cinematic trailer premiered at this year’s Game Awards.
Last Sentinel is a cyberpunk-themed open-world game, representing the first significant release from Lightspeed LA, the California-based branch of LightSpeed Studios, a game development division of the Chinese tech giant Tencent. The development is overseen by industry veteran Steve C. Martin, boasting more than 25 years of experience with AAA titles like Grand Theft Auto 5, Red Dead Redemption 1 and 2, Need For Speed: Underground 1 and 2, and Bully. The Lightspeed LA team comprises individuals with extensive backgrounds in games such as God of War, The Last of Us, Uncharted, and Jedi: Fallen Order. Tencent’s active involvement in the gaming industry suggests that Last Sentinel may stand out as a significant venture into mainstream gaming.
The announcement of Last Sentinel, showcased through a cinematic trailer at The Game Awards, signals the entry of Lightspeed LA into the gaming landscape, combining industry expertise and creative talent to deliver a promising cyberpunk gaming experience.
The nearly two-minute trailer for Last Sentinel provides a compelling preview of the game’s narrative. It unfolds in a dystopian future iteration of Tokyo, where a menacing group of robots attempts to breach what appears to be an orphanage attended by human-like android caretakers. Just as the invaders nearly succeed, a woman known as “The Demon,” possibly the protagonist Hiromi Shoda, intervenes, eliminating the threat and leading the children into the rainy night.
Initially reported to be in development in January 2022 as a cinematic open-world game and an original intellectual property, Last Sentinel’s first glimpse leaves much to be revealed after two years of anticipation. According to Lightspeed LA, the game promises a distinct cast, environment, story, and gameplay experience. Although it’s challenging to assess the title comprehensively, it inevitably draws comparisons to other cyberpunk-genre games such as Cyberpunk 2077 or Deus Ex, particularly in terms of open-world dynamics and the game universe’s aesthetic.
The timing of Last Sentinel’s potential release is opportune. With reports suggesting that CD Projekt Red has concluded new content development for Cyberpunk 2077, enthusiasts of the cyberpunk genre might be yearning for a fresh perspective. While a specific release date is yet to be announced by Lightspeed LA, a reasonable estimate could be the first half of 2025 at the latest.
Last Sentinel wasn’t the sole surprise unveiled at this year’s The Game Awards, showcasing original projects like the unexpected collaboration between Hideo Kojima and Jordan Peele in the Xbox exclusive OD. The event abounded with significant announcements from prominent franchises, developers, and publishers, generating excitement among gamers for the impending future of gaming.
