A recently revealed screenshot from The Last of Us Online game provides insights into various features that Naughty Dog had planned for the now-canceled game.
A credible industry insider shared a screenshot from The Last of Us Online game, showcasing its main menu and several features that were originally intended by the developers for the project that was recently abandoned. Naughty Dog officially called off The Last of Us Online game on December 14, expressing a deliberate decision to avoid fully committing to live service games.
The cancellation was met with considerable disappointment from fans, especially considering the extensive development history of The Last of Us Online before its cancellation. Initially conceived as a multiplayer component for The Last of Us 2, the game evolved into a standalone project around 2019. Naughty Dog officially acknowledged the development of The Last of Us Online game in the summer of 2022, only to discontinue the game a year and a half later.
After the announcement of the project’s termination, recognized industry expert Dusk Golem posted on the ResetEra forums, providing a snapshot from The Last of Us Online game that they had in their possession. The leaked image showcases the game’s main menu, divulging various undisclosed aspects of the abandoned project. For instance, the presence of the BattlePass tab at the upper section of the screen suggests that Naughty Dog had intentions to implement a tiered progression system, drawing inspiration from successful models used in games like DotA 2 and Fortnite for the game’s monetization strategy.
The Last of Us Online Game Leaked Features
- Battle Pass progression
- Battle Royale mode called Survivor Solos
- Bunk (presumably an armory)
- In-game item store
- Jobs Board
- Study
- Seasonal content
The leaked screenshot from The Last of Us Online discloses the existence of in-game currency and a digital store. Additionally, seasonal content, a feature named Bunk, reminiscent of Fortnite’s Armory, and a battle royale mode referred to as Survivor Solos during development were part of the envisioned experience.
Although the return of the multiplayer Factions mode from The Last of Us was not explicitly confirmed by the leaked image, it hinted at the presence of a Jobs Board offering limited-time quests and a menu feature named Study, likely associated with character customization and progression akin to Bunk.
Considering the substantial resources invested in The Last of Us Online before its cancellation, there is a possibility that Naughty Dog might repurpose some of its systems in future titles. Despite ongoing development on various unannounced Naughty Dog games, all of which are single-player focused, the likelihood of significant feature exchange between them and TLOU Online appears somewhat diminished.
