Sony Announces to Stream PS5 Games on the PS5

Sony is preparing to introduce cloud-streamed PS5 gaming to PlayStation 5 consoles in Japan, Europe, and North America later in October, as announced in a PlayStation Blog post on Wednesday.

The ability to stream PS5 games is an exclusive benefit for subscribers to PlayStation Plus Premium, Sony’s highest-priced tier of PlayStation Plus offerings, which recently underwent a price increase. Sony plans to roll out this feature in stages, with specific target release dates for each region:

  • Japan: October 17th
  • Europe: October 23rd
  • North America: October 30th

Initially, Sony is committing to enabling the streaming of “select” PS5 games, but it intends to expand the library to include “hundreds” of PS5 games in the future. The selection of cloud streaming-compatible games will comprise titles from the PlayStation Plus Game Catalog, digital games owned by players like Resident Evil 4, Genshin Impact, and Fortnite, as well as game trials for titles such as Hogwarts Legacy and The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. However, Sony hasn’t specified which of these games will be available at the feature’s initial launch.

Sony also states that users will have the option to choose their preferred streaming resolution, with choices including 4K, 1440p, 1080p, and 720p. It’s important to note that PS5 game streaming will only function on PS5 consoles “at launch,” suggesting that the ability to stream PS5 games to other devices may become available at a later time.

Sony has been gearing up for a cloud gaming push for some time, commencing official tests of cloud-streamed PS5 games back in June. While cloud streaming appears to align well with the forthcoming PlayStation Portal handheld device, it’s currently limited to streaming games over Wi-Fi from your PS5. The success of cloud-streamed PS5 games is eagerly anticipated, and users are looking forward to testing them to assess their performance.
