Sony has taken an unconventional step by confirming one of the free games included in the upcoming PlayStation Plus lineup for February 2024 more than two weeks in advance of the usual schedule.
Typically, Sony unveils its PS Plus free games or Essential tier additions on the last Wednesday before the first Tuesday of a month. However, this time, the company has chosen to disclose that Foamstars will be the headline title available from February 6. This early revelation is likely due to the unique circumstance that Foamstars, published by Square Enix, did not have a previously announced release date; it will be launching directly on the PS Plus service.
Foamstars was first introduced in May 2023, and its reveal trailer showcased various characters adorned in modern streetwear within a city illuminated by neon lights. The trailer provided insights into the characters, their foam-manipulating abilities, and the combat dynamics. Overall, Foamstars appears to be a game combining elements of Overwatch and Splatoon.
PS Plus Free Game for February 2024
The diversity in Foamstars’ gameplay mirrors the overall versatility of the game. During the beta, two game modes, Smash the Star and Happy Bath Survival, were available. However, the launch introduces a third mode: Rubber Duck Party. In Smash the Star, teams aim to defeat each other’s “Star Player,” while Happy Bath Survival divides teams into two halves—those inside the arena must engage in combat, while those outside provide support. The new mode, Rubber Duck Party, focuses on reaching, controlling, defending, and escorting a massive duck. Additionally, the game features a solo-playable mission mode, various challenges ranging from anytime to weekly, and a lineup of seasonal content with corresponding passes.
At launch, Foamstars will offer a Season Pass, presenting Mel T as a character reward. Beyond seasonal content, the game plans to introduce more characters, maps, and modes throughout 2024. Positioned as an appealing choice for enthusiasts of co-op shooters like Splatoon, Foamstars’ inclusion in the February PS Plus lineup highlights its availability from day one—an unusual occurrence for PS Plus titles, drawing attention to games that might otherwise go unnoticed.
While Sony is unlikely to reveal the other two free PS Plus games for February until January 31, they, along with Foamstars, will be accessible starting February 6. Meanwhile, as of the current moment, players can claim new PS Plus Extra and Premium games for January 2024.
