According to an insider source, an intriguing Halo game created by Certain Affinity has allegedly been scrapped after nearly four years of development.
Reports suggest that a new Halo game, known by the codename Project Tatanka, which had been in the works for several years, has been canceled. Certain Affinity was reportedly the developer behind this mysterious Halo title.
Halo Infinite, released in 2020, stands as the latest installment in the franchise. Originally intended by 343 Industries to serve as a long-term live-service platform, plans may have changed due to a decline in the game’s player base. Recent reports indicate that 343 Industries is actively engaged in the development of the next mainline Halo game, offering hope for Halo enthusiasts. However, there’s unfortunate news for fans of a separate Halo game developed by Certain Affinity, as it appears to have received a disappointing update.
Rumor: New Halo Game Reportedly Canceled
According to information shared during the XboxEra podcast by insider Shpeshal Nick, Certain Affinity’s Halo game has reportedly been canceled for reasons that were not disclosed. There are rumors suggesting that this enigmatic project started as a battle royale-style mode for Halo Infinite before evolving into a standalone game. Initial reports indicated that Certain Affinity had been working on this Halo project since the spring of 2020. While it remains speculative, there’s a possibility that some of the work from the canceled project could be incorporated into Halo Infinite or a future Halo installment.
In 2022, Certain Affinity announced an effort to strengthen its collaboration with 343 Industries, expressing a focus on the evolution of Halo Infinite. If this collaboration persists, it is conceivable that Certain Affinity might continue contributing to other Halo projects beyond Project Tatanka.
Leaks have supported the notion that Certain Affinity’s Project Tatanka was originally conceived as a battle royale mode for Halo Infinite. Some fans have suggested the inclusion of a battle royale mode in Halo Infinite to reinvigorate its popularity. Despite the introduction of noteworthy features like Firefight, Forge, a custom games browser, numerous new maps, and more, Halo Infinite has struggled to regain its status among Xbox’s most popular games since its release.
Advocates for a battle royale mode in Halo Infinite point to the game’s support for large maps, diverse vehicles and weapons, and a relatively high time-to-kill – characteristics commonly associated with successful battle royales. Apart from providing a fresh and enjoyable gaming experience, the widespread popularity of the battle royale genre could potentially contribute to Halo reclaiming its former prominence.
Alternatively, some fans propose that 343 Industries should consider remaking classic Halo games as a strategy to revitalize the franchise. With over 15 years having passed since the release of the highly regarded Halo 3, remaking such classics could attract both existing fans and a new audience. The ultimate direction for the Halo franchise, however, remains uncertain, and only time will reveal the decisions made by Microsoft and 343 Industries.
