Public Domain Day, observed on the first day of each year, marks the expiration of copyright protection for creative works, freeing them from restrictions and the need for permission. The inclusion of popular cartoon characters in the public domain sparks particular enthusiasm, allowing their use in various media forms. A notable instance is the 2023 horror film “Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey,” which incorporated characters like Winnie the Pooh and Piglet. In 2024, Disney’s Steamboat Willie joined the public domain, prompting horror game developer Nightmare Forge Games to unveil its latest project featuring the iconic character Mickey Mouse.

Nightmare Forge Games has revealed Infestation 88, an upcoming survival horror co-op game where players face mutated rodents, including a monstrous creature sporting Mickey Mouse’s visage. Equipped with infestation gear, players must collaborate to eliminate rodent nests, quell the outbreak, and contend with entities inspired by classic characters and urban legends. Although still in development, the game’s Steam page indicates an Early Access release in 2024.
The announcement surprised many gamers on social media, with reactions ranging from excitement to skepticism about Infestation 88’s quality and the prospect of Mickey Mouse in a horror setting. Despite concerns, some gamers appreciated Nightmare Forge Games’ unique take on the beloved Disney character.
Infestation 88 joins the trend of horror games inspired by children’s characters, a subgenre popularized by titles like Five Nights At Freddy’s. While the co-op shooter may not adopt a child-like aesthetic, it aims to instill fear through the use of a character cherished by many.
In addition to Infestation 88, there’s anticipation for another Mickey Mouse-related game, Mouse, by Fumi Games. Described as a blend of Cuphead and Doom, this forthcoming FPS title features a distinctive rubber hose animation style with characters reminiscent of classic Disney figures. However, Mouse is scheduled for a later release in 2025.
