Chinese Gamer Dies After Allegedly Streaming Too Much

A tragic incident has been linked to a Chinese gamer demise, pointing to the toll of an exhaustive live streaming schedule as a potential cause.

The death of a Chinese gamer has been attributed to extreme exhaustion induced by prolonged streaming. In an effort to stand out among content creators and draw more viewers, streamers have resorted to extreme methods, such as prolonged subathons lasting weeks or months, or challenges to stream without sleep. However, even following a relatively regular streaming schedule can pose health risks.

The content creation industry has expanded significantly, with companies hiring individuals to produce videos or live stream, often providing sets resembling bedrooms or gaming spaces. In Zhenzhou, China, a student named Li, employed by Henan Qinyi Culture and Media Co., was assigned to the night shift from November 5, aiming for increased earnings. His tasks included uploading 15 short videos monthly and streaming for 240 hours within 26 days, with a minimum compensation of around $420 USD.

Streaming from 9 PM to 6 AM for five consecutive nights, Li was discovered by roommates on November 10, seemingly asleep yet unresponsive with rapid breathing. Rushed to the hospital, Li was declared deceased. While the cause of death remains unreported by China Daily (via Insider Gaming), exhaustion and the company’s demand for continuous streaming are speculated to have played a role.

However, the company disclaims responsibility for Li’s death. A legal representative, Zhang, clarified that they offered only a platform for streaming and received commissions from tips, emphasizing Li’s autonomy to choose work hours and the location for his streams. Despite this stance, the company extended a $700 compensation offer to Li’s family “on humanitarian grounds.”

Although working 45 hours in five days isn’t inherently perilous, Li was accustomed to daytime work. His body might not have adapted to the abrupt change in sleep patterns, compounded by potential academic commitments during this time. Additionally, prolonged periods of inactivity pose health risks, potentially causing blood vessel damage and increasing the risk of blood clots, particularly in individuals with predisposing factors.
