Attack on Titan Anime’s Conclusion to Differ Slightly From Manga Says the Creator

In a recent revelation, Attack on Titan’s creator, Hajime Isayama, shared that the anime’s final scenes will deviate slightly from the original manga. Isayama, in a heartfelt message, expressed that he requested some alterations in the storyboard thumbnails for the anime adaptation’s conclusion. He extended his apologies and appreciation to the anime studio MAPPA for their dedication and challenges in bringing the story to life.

Isayama originally unveiled a rough thumbnail layout draft for the manga’s final panel in a documentary program titled “Jōnetsu Tairiku” back in November 2018. However, the concluding chapters of the manga were only published on April 9, 2021, marking the end of an era for the series.

The highly-anticipated finale, titled “Attack on Titan Final Season THE FINAL CHAPTERS (Shingeki no Kyojin The Final Season Kanketsu-hen) Part 2,” is set to premiere this Saturday, November 4, on the NHK General channel at 24:00 JST (effectively, November 5 at midnight JST or November 4 at 11:00 a.m. EDT). For global viewers, Crunchyroll and Hulu will offer streaming access to the finale, which boasts a runtime of 85 minutes.

Hajime Isayama initiated the iconic Attack on Titan manga’s journey in Kodansha’s Bessatsu Shōnen Magazine in 2009, eventually culminating the series in April 2021. The manga’s 34th and final volume reached readers in June 2021, leaving a lasting impact on the world of manga and anime. Kodansha USA Publishing facilitated the English digital and print release of the manga, with the 34th volume becoming available in October 2021.

The Attack on Titan saga commenced its animated legacy with the first television anime season premiering in April 2013. Subsequent seasons in 2017 and a divided third season in 2018 and 2019 captivated fans worldwide. The final season of the anime, “Attack on Titan The Final Season,” premiered in December 2020 on NHK and comprised 16 episodes. Funimation and Crunchyroll offered English-subtitled streams, followed by Adult Swim’s Toonami’s broadcast beginning in January 2021, along with Funimation’s English dub.

The series also made its mark globally, with the first part of “Attack on Titan Final Season THE FINAL CHAPTERS” arriving as a one-hour special on March 3, available under titles like “Attack on Titan Final Season THE FINAL CHAPTERS Special 1” on Crunchyroll and Hulu. Toonami introduced it to a broader audience on September 9. Now, as the saga continues, a fresh theme song titled “Under the Tree,” performed by SIM, accompanies the adventure.
