Sony’s PlayStation 5 (PS5) continues to excel in sales three years into its existence, maintaining its position as the best-selling console in both units sold and dollar sales for October 2023. Notably, PlayStation 5 sales stand as the second-best-selling console in Sony’s history.
Examining year-over-year PlayStation 5 sales within the first 36 months on the market in the United States, the PS5 follows only the PS2 in unit sales, according to Mat Piscatella, the executive director and video game industry analyst at Circana (formerly NPD). Piscatella shared the sales rankings on Twitter, stating, “After 36 months in the market, US hardware unit sales ranks by ecosystem: PlayStation Platforms ONLY – PlayStation 2 > PlayStation 5 > PlayStation 4 > PlayStation > PlayStation 3.”
Despite its launch coinciding with the challenges of the Covid-19 pandemic and facing availability issues during its initial year, the PS5 has consistently seen increasing numbers. The recent introduction of the PS5 Slim to the market suggests the potential for further sales growth, especially as more consoles become accessible during the 2023 holiday shopping season.
In terms of overall sales, the PlayStation 5 sales have reached nearly 45 million units sold. While it remains behind the lifetime numbers of the PS2 (158.7 million), there is optimism that the PS5 could approach the PS2’s performance by the time the PS6 is introduced.
