Are you eager to put your strategic skills to the test? When it comes to evaluating your tactical abilities, few experiences can rival the exhilaration of engaging in high-quality war games. Gamers around the world, whether on consoles, mobile devices, or personal computers, are drawn to these games for their intense and often fast-paced gameplay, offering immersive experiences.
Whether you prefer a straightforward, strategy-oriented title or a more hands-on approach, today’s market offers a wide array of excellent choices. These games offer the flexibility of playing in single-player, online, or multiplayer modes.
But where should one start when seeking to build their collection of war games? To help point you in the right direction, we’ve compiled a list of some of the most impressive war games currently available for online play.
Call of Duty Black Ops 2:
Black Ops 2 marked a spectacular sequel to the original game and, in my opinion, stands as the quintessential Call of Duty installment. I must admit, I’ve invested significantly more time in it than I’d like to admit.
Players are drawn to the game for its relentless action, setting it apart from the slower-paced nature of other Call of Duty titles. It takes everything that made the original great and elevates it to new heights. Where else can you find yourself in a firefight in a bustling bar filled with innocent bystanders?
The revamped zombie mode is notably more comprehensive, introducing additional maps, diverse zombie variations, and various methods for dealing with them. Black Ops 2 also introduced the innovative Pick 10 system, affording players the freedom to experiment with various class selections.
With ten unique options at their disposal, each player had the opportunity to craft their loadout. It boasts the most outstanding multiplayer map ever conceived, delivering exhilarating gameplay at its finest.
Enlisted:
Enlisted, a free-to-play game, is a valuable addition to the world of war games, offering a strong sense of historical authenticity. The game places significant emphasis on two iconic World War II conflicts: the Invasion of Normandy and the Battle for Moscow. Your responsibilities encompass overseeing troop deployment, artillery support, tank maneuvering, and naval assistance. With over ten distinct squad types, including assault, sniper, radio specialists, tank drivers, and airborne pilots, players have a wide range of options. Additional packages and campaigns, such as the “Pacific War,” are also available for separate purchase.
While some players have praised the game’s historical accuracy, others have noted its relatively slow pace. Nonetheless, it remains an engaging experience that demands strategic thinking, tactical prowess, and teamwork for victory. The meticulous attention to map detail and high-quality sound effects enhance the immersion factor. However, for some players, the constant grind may prove to be too taxing.
Call of Duty Warzone:
Some individuals might find its placement on this list surprising, or perhaps they didn’t expect it to make the top 10 at all. To put it simply, it’s a ‘Battle Royale.’ The game’s ability to successfully revive the battle royale mode played a significant role in its meteoric rise to prominence.
Many content creators flocked to Warzone to capture highlight plays for their YouTube channels, further fueling the game’s popularity. Its greatest strength lies in the fact that it’s completely free to play, but unfortunately, it also has a significant hacker problem.
On November 16th, 2022, Warzone 2 was launched, generating considerable excitement among a large number of players eagerly awaiting this sequel.
Verdun:
Verdun ranks as the next exceptional war game in our lineup. This massively multiplayer online first-person shooter (MMOFPS) plunges players into the midst of World War I, specifically the Battle of Verdun. Featuring fifteen distinct squad types, each equipped with its own array of authentic weaponry, uniforms, and other realistic elements (including the choice to engage in one of four historical eras), Verdun offers an immersive gaming experience. Up to sixty-four players can engage in intense battles on the Frontlines, with numerous gameplay styles available, including tactical attrition and rifle attrition, which hinge on player skill.
The game has garnered significant praise from the majority of reviewers for its meticulously recreated historical setting, faithfully reproduced weapons, and equipment. However, some critics have questioned the historical accuracy of the progression system. While the online community may require some refinement, we found the game’s diverse and enjoyable arsenal, coupled with a plethora of hidden gems, to be quite engaging.
Call of Duty Vanguard:
In 2021, the gaming world welcomed a new addition to the Call of Duty franchise, “COD Vanguard.” As anticipated, it delivers the thrilling gaming experience and impressive visuals that fans have grown accustomed to. Transporting players to the heart of World War II, Vanguard offers both a captivating single-player campaign with diverse objectives and an exceptional multiplayer option.
While the single-player campaign stands out, the majority of Call of Duty enthusiasts gravitate toward the multiplayer and online campaign modes. Within these modes, players can engage in various competitive experiences, including team deathmatches, search and destroy missions, dominance battles, and free-for-all showdowns. Additionally, players have the option to immerse themselves in the classic “Zombies” mode, where they confront hordes of the undead. If you and your friends are seeking fast-paced and exhilarating gaming sessions, the Zombies mode presents an excellent choice.
Valiant Heart The Great War:
Following the backdrop of World War II, World War I takes center stage. Valiant Hearts: The Great War delivers a narrative steeped in character-driven comic-book storytelling. In the game, a young German soldier experiences the heartbreaking loss of his beloved. Alongside a loyal canine companion, players are tasked with aiding a carefully chosen group of characters in their quest for reunification.
This gaming experience adds a personal touch to the battlefield, blending action, adventure, and intricate puzzles. It offers a realistic portrayal of famous World War I battlegrounds like the Marne and Somme, including the grim realities of trench warfare.
Reviews have consistently lauded the game for its outstanding graphics and compelling storyline. Some players have even dubbed it the best in its genre. However, there have been reports of disappointment with certain puzzle solutions and narrative resolutions, suggesting that it may not be the pinnacle of strategic gaming. Nonetheless, Valiant Hearts excels in delivering a poignant wartime narrative through its missions, leaving players emotionally invested and sometimes shedding a tear or two.
Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2:
Modern Warfare 2, in my view, shares a spot at the top with the original game due to significant improvements made by the developers. They took everything that made the first Modern Warfare a success and refined it even further. Although I personally believe that the campaign mode could have been expanded upon, my preferences place it right alongside the original Modern Warfare.
The storytelling in the game is compelling enough to keep players engaged even when playing solo. Playing as a double agent working against terrorists, you’ll find it hard to put the game down until your mission is complete. In the multiplayer mode, we encountered all sorts of players, from spammers to snipers.
Survival in this mode demanded strategy, and it was incredibly enjoyable to participate in even on its own. The game introduced unique ways to meet your demise that you might not have considered. For instance, if someone threw a knife at you and you managed to dodge it, it could still prove fatal if it ricocheted off a wall and struck you. Modern Warfare 2 unquestionably deserves a top spot on any list.
Battlefield V:
Battlefield V, the eleventh installment in one of the gaming industry’s most enduring and successful series, offers an enjoyable and immersive first-person shooting experience. It boasts wide-ranging compatibility across various platforms and gaming consoles, ensuring accessibility for gamers everywhere. As with many of the previously mentioned games, Battlefield V thrusts players into the heart of World War II.
The game’s meticulous attention to authentic details within its combat sequences creates a sensation of being right in the midst of the wartime action. However, upon its initial release, Battlefield V faced criticism for its perceived lack of content. Nevertheless, despite not being the most recent entry in Electronic Arts’ Battlefield series, it continues to enjoy popularity among dedicated fans.
Conclusion
In conclusion, the allure of war games, from intricate strategy titles to intense action-packed experiences, is undeniable. These games offer players a unique opportunity to explore the complexities of conflict, whether historical or fictional, in a controlled and immersive environment. The emotional engagement, strategic thinking, and sheer excitement that war games provide make them a compelling genre for gamers of all types. As the gaming industry continues to evolve, the appeal of war games remains a testament to the enduring fascination with the art of warfare, strategy, and tactical decision-making.
