Crunchyroll’s Snubs Attack on Titan For Anime of the Year Award

Crunchyroll revealed the nominees for the Anime of the Year award on January 17, 2024, and notably, Attack on Titan: Final Season – The Final Chapters was absent from the list. Surprisingly, it did not secure a spot among the top six anime for consideration at the upcoming 2024 Anime Awards ceremony.

The Crunchyroll Anime Awards is an annual event dedicated to recognizing the excellence and creativity within Japanese animation. It applauds achievements in animation, music, and performances, covering a range of anime presented through streaming or in theaters. This year marks the eighth edition of the awards ceremony.

Crunchyroll's Snubs Attack on Titan For Anime of the Year Award

Crunchyroll unveiled the nominees for its awards program, encompassing 25 categories, on Wednesday, January 17, 2024. Among these categories is the esteemed Anime of the Year award.

The nominees for the award were as follows:

  • BOCCHI THE ROCK!
  • Chainsaw Man
  • Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Swordsmith Village Arc
  • JUJUTSU KAISEN Season 2
  • 【OSHI NO KO】
  • VINLAND SAGA SEASON 2

Evidently, Attack on Titan: Final Season – The Final Chapters did not secure a nomination despite the anticipation surrounding its 2023 finale, as revealed by Crunchyroll’s Anime of the Year award nominees. Fans may perceive this omission as unfair, but it stems from the specific criteria set for the awards’ voting process.

Attack on Titan

The judges were limited to nominating anime that had at least one episode aired on television or online in Japan between October 2022 and September 2023. While Attack on Titan could have met this criterion, the voting period’s conclusion on October 17, 2023, became a decisive factor.

Attack on Titan

The first episode of Attack on Titan: Final Season – The Final Chapters Special Episode 1, released on March 4, 2023, was eligible for consideration. However, the special episode 2, which premiered on November 5, 2023, fell outside the voting period. Consequently, with only one of the two special episodes qualifying before the deadline, the judges may not have deemed Attack on Titan worthy of nomination for the award.
